John Knox comments that this prayer is an overture in which each of the themes, later to be heard in a different context, is given an anticipatory hearing, as in a musical piece, a great classical work. The basic melody line will be in the first movement, but it will be worked out and developed in the later movements. That is what this prayer is like. You know, it should be that way for us as well: Our daily prayers should provide the theme, and that theme should set the trajectory for the day that we a re going to live, and our actions should follow from the content of our prayers.1
