Commentary on Luke 18:15 (Summary)

Luc 18:15 (NEG79)

15 On lui amena aussi les petits enfants, afin qu'il les touche. Mais les disciples, voyant cela, reprenaient ceux qui les amenaient.

Jesus is on his way to Jerusalem (Luke 9:51). He is certainly not alone on the way. Great crowds accompanied him (Luke 14:25). The people sense that this teacher has something to say to them. They do not want to miss a single word from him. They come to him from all walks of life (Luke 15:1–2). Now they even bring their young children. The Greek word brephē indicates that it refers to babies and toddlers. The parents so desperately want their little ones to be touched by Jesus too. Being blessed by Jesus is so important to them.

But Jesus' disciples rise up in protest. Their teacher is far too busy with his teaching. He really does not have time for you. In any case, your young children cannot understand anything about it. In short, go home and take good care of your children.

It is striking that this event is recounted by three evangelists (see also Matthew 19:13–15; Mark 10:13–16). This shows that this is a very important event for us. Apparently, we need to fully take to heart this remarkable event of the coming of those very young children to Jesus. It clearly holds an important lesson for adults of all times.
