The intimate bond between Jesus and the Father can actually serve as an image of the close bond between Jesus and his disciples. It is astonishing and moving. How is this possible? How will a limited human being ever experience this? Here too the answer is that the Holy Spirit accomplishes it. After all, this Spirit of truth was sent forth to bring this about. It began on that special day of Pentecost in Jerusalem (Acts 2:1–47) and continues until the day of Jesus' return to the earth. Jesus himself also saw this as his mission. Shortly after Jesus' conversation with his disciples on that Thursday evening, of which we receive an account in John 14, we hear something of Jesus speaking to the Father in chapter 17. What he prayed for fits so well with John 14:20: I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you sent me
