Commentary on Deuteronomy 6:8 (Summary)

Deutéronome 6:8 (NEG79)

8 Tu les lieras comme un signe sur tes mains, et ils seront comme des fronteaux entre tes yeux.

Once again, these commandments underscore the importance of always paying attention to God's commandments. In everything—in all our actions and thoughts—we must consider what the Lord requires of us.

Should we take this command literally or figuratively? Judaism has opted for the literal interpretation. Every morning, the tefillin, or phylacteries, are to be placed on the arms, containing a small box that holds, among other things, the words of this verse. Similarly, a small box containing the same words is placed on the forehead. However, even with this interpretation, the literal application of this can only be limited. You cannot walk around with prayer straps all day... The point is that a person would internalize God's commandments so that in all their thoughts and actions, they are guided by the Lord’s will (see Proverbs 6:21–22).
