The Hebrew verb sanan means to instill through repetition.
The point is that, in this way, God's commandments will truly penetrate with the children, leaving an indelible impression that they will remember for a lifetime (see Proverbs 22:6). This command may apply primarily to parents, but it is also relevant for every educator. That is why these words from Deuteronomy 6:1–25 were once displayed in a highly visible place in a secondary school auditorium. For many years, a booklet entitled For Home and Travel
was also used to teach the catechism to baptized members.
