Commentary on Deuteronomy 6:1 (Summary)

Deutéronome 6:1 (NEG79)

1 Voici les commandements, les lois et les ordonnances que l'Eternel, votre Dieu, a commandé de vous enseigner, afin que vous les mettiez en pratique dans le pays dont vous allez prendre possession;

After years of wandering through the barren wilderness (described in detail in chapters 1—4), the people of Israel finally reach the borders of the Promised Land. Moses is commanded by the Lord to emphatically instruct them now how they are to live there. Therefore, the Ten Commandments are recited again (Deuteronomy 5:1–33). Based on these basic rules, Moses describes how they are to live and conduct themselves according to God's law in various situations. (The name of the book Deuteronomy means the second law, the law restated again.) This book of the Bible is full of God's commandments, laws, and rules, as is immediately indicated in this first verse.
