The call to follow the Lord through suffering into glory

This Servant song is ours to read and study in the light of the coming of Christ, so that we would see that the Lord calls us to follow the Servant, through suffering into glory. It is the preacher’s task not just to connect the text to Christ but to preach Christ such that the hearers will be drawn to him in faith, trust, and hope.1 Thus, it needs to be made plain that those who are followers of the Servant, when faced with hostility, opposition, or hardship, are to stay the course of obedience as he did. They have the promise that the one who endures to the end will be saved (Matthew 10:22). Disciples of Christ who obediently submit to his lordship and providence also have this word from the Lord: To those who by patience in well-doing seek for glory and honor and immortality, he will give eternal life (Romans 2:7).”2 Another, more familiar word of confidence in Christ is in Romans 8:31–39. Though Christ faced death without disgrace of personal sin, he still endured the shame of the cross, for the sake of his own, so that they could be spared condemnation, and never be separated from the one who suffered before he was vindicated as the triumphant one.
