1. Ésaïe 50:7 (NEG79)

What assurance does the Servant have regarding his suffering?

Isaiah (Ésaïe) 50:7 (ESV)

7 But the Lord GOD helps me; therefore I have not been disgraced; therefore I have set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be put to shame.

In this verse the Servant shows understanding that since his heavy suffering is the result of obedience, he can be sure that the Lord is not absent but is helping him. As such he can endure suffering without knowing disgrace,1 either presently or in the end. In fact, this confession of trust is heard throughout Isaiah 50:7–9 (as in Isaiah 42:4; Isaiah 49:4–5). The certainty of the Lord’s help makes the suffering bearable and the eventual victory all the more glorious.
