4The Lord GOD has given me the tongue of those who are taught, that I may know how to sustain with a word him who is weary. Morning by morning he awakens; he awakens my ear to hear as those who are taught.
The verb for to give includes the sense of to put, place, appoint (see Isaiah 42:1, where God has put his Spirit upon the Servant).1 Thus the words given me could also be translated appointed for me. For the fact is, the Lord not merely gave the tongue as a gift but he also gave it an assignment.2
