Christ was the perfectly righteous servant of the Lord. He could claim perfect moral integrity before God, for all his living days. Thus, when surrounded by enemies who hurled false accusations at him (Matthew 26:60; Mark 14:64), he had every right to appeal to God for help and vindication. Yet unlike David, Christ was not delivered from his enemies even after praying that the cup of God’s wrath would pass him by. Instead, he was handed over to the enemy.
Yet, he was not abandoned to the grave. Instead, the Father (and Spirit!) vindicated the Son on the third day when raising him from the dead, declaring him to be the Son of God in power (Romans 1:4; 1 Timothy 3:16). Thus, he awoke from the night of death, to behold the face of the Father in righteousness, and be satisfied with his likeness. And because of his suffering and resurrection as the last Adam, all who trust in him will likewise follow him, through suffering into God-filled glory.
