The Lord promises David that his dynasty will last forever;1 there will always be a ruler from the line of David over God’s people.2 The failure of Davidic kings may make it seem as if this promise has failed, but such setbacks will be temporary. The prophets of Israel will hold fast to the hope that the promise itself remains even in the absence of a formal king, and that an ideal king would come, who has an everlasting kingdom.3
