The wrongdoing in view refers to serious sins and acts of rebellion (1 Samuel 20:30; 2 Samuel 19:19; 2 Samuel 24:17; 1 Kings 8:47; 2 Chronicles 6:37; Esther 1:16; Job 33:27; Psalm 106:6; Proverbs 12:8; Jeremiah 3:21; Jeremiah 9:5; Daniel 9:5). The punishment in response will be corrective (as in Proverbs 3:12; Proverbs 13:24; Proverbs 22:15; Proverbs 23:13–14; Proverbs 29:15),1 and in keeping with the terms of the old covenant.2 As an example, the old covenant curses of human oppressors (Leviticus 26:25; Deuteronomy 28:25, Deuteronomy 28:49–52) were literally fulfilled in the time of Solomon (1 Kings 11:14, 1 Kings 11:23–26).3 The implication of this is that it is only the son who is perfectly obedient that will rule forever (1 Kings 8:25; 1 Kings 9:4–5; Psalm 132:1–18) while all others will be disciplined and have their rule cut short.
