It is implicit in the Lord’s communication that David will be the one to bring rest and security for the people of Israel so that they are firmly planted in the land of Canaan (see Exodus 15:17).1 He will bring about the fulfillment of the Mosaic promises (Deuteronomy 12:10; Deuteronomy 25:19) and renew the success of Joshua.2 This implies that such rest has not yet been secured at the time when David makes plans to build the temple (see 1 Kings 5:3–5).
