It is not clear against whom David directed his anger. Many commentators understand David to be angry at the Lord because he had rejected David’s attempt to honour him1 and called him out for his lack of attention.2 Such a view is possible; however, it does seem to run against the grain of 2 Samuel 1:1–8:18 where David is positively portrayed. As such, it may be better to consider David’s anger as being directed against Uzzah and Ahio. He had trusted the Levites to carry the ark in accordance with God’s commandments (1 Chronicles 15:13),3 and he is upset that they did not do so. Their actions have resulted in fatal judgment from God, and it prevented the ark from coming to Jerusalem.4 What is more, the entire community had been put at risk because they had failed to follow the directives given by the Lord in his Word.
8 David fut irrité de ce que l'Eternel avait frappé Uzza d'un tel châtiment. Et ce lieu a été appelé jusqu'à ce jour Pérets-Uzza.
