Some commentators argue that the large gathering of chosen men was a military escort that was meant to prevent any Philistine act of reprisal following their defeat in battle (see 2 Samuel 5:17–25).1 Alternatively, it was representatives from the entire nation meant to mark the special and solemn occasion.2
