David previously defeated the Philistines at the beginning of his reign (2 Samuel 5:17–25). It appears as if he embarked on another campaign against them in which he took the city of Metheg-ammah and almost completely subjugated them.1 In doing this he duplicates the great accomplishment of Samuel (1 Samuel 7:12–14) and he ensures that the Philistines will never again be a serious threat to Israel (see also 1 Kings 4:21; 1 Kings 15:27; 1 Kings 16:15; 2 Kings 8:2–3; 2 Kings 18:8).2
1 Après cela, David battit les Philistins et les humilia, et il enleva de la main des Philistins les rênes de leur capitale.
