Michal remains a sad part of this portion of history. Her hardness ultimately shows the truth prophesied to the serpent in the opening chapters of the Bible: I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring
(Genesis 3:15). More painfully, this division extends into the very heart of the covenant people of God, as the Lord made clear to Rebekah: Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples from within you shall be divided
(Genesis 25:23). There is an election according to grace that ensures that every one of God’s people will be saved, but this lies ultimately in the secret counsel of God (Deuteronomy 29:29). Man’s duty remains to repent and to believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, to respond to the gospel in the obedience of faith
(Romans 1:5). Failure to do this remains the fault of man and his stubborn unbelief. This is why it is so important to take heed to what the Scriptures teach in this regard: Therefore, brothers, be all the more diligent to confirm your calling and election
(2 Peter 1:10); Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves
(2 Corinthians 13:5).
Michal chose to follow in her father’s footsteps rather than to be one with her husband in seeking God and rejoicing in the symbol of his presence. Here was a message for the Chronicler’s own day and important for our own age. Do we follow those who have little or no interest in worshipping God or do we earnestly seek to be in tune with God and wholeheartedly serve him?1
