How will the Lord make Jerusalem and “the houses of Jerusalem and the houses of the kings of Judah” defiled like Topheth?
It is now absolutely clear that Jeremiah’s symbolic act of shattering the clay jar in Topheth is symbolic of both the spiritual condition of the whole nation and the subsequent judgment that is coming to all of Judah. The defilement of Topheth happens at more than one level. It is defiled because dead bodies are buried there, but it has also been defiled by the pagan worship that has taken place there (Jeremiah 19:4–5). Topheth, however, is simply a picture of the whole nation. All of Jerusalem is defiled like Topheth. The city has been defiled by the pagan worship that has taken place in homes all over the city, even the king’s home. The subsequent judgment that is coming will result in further defilement as the entire city is filled with dead bodies (Leviticus 21:1–3; Numbers 5:2).
