2 Samuel 3:6–39 (NEG79)

6 Pendant la guerre entre la maison de Saül et la maison de David, Abner tint ferme pour la maison de Saül.

The books of 1 and 2 Samuel seek to ask and answer two important questions, namely:

  1. Will kingship help Israel obey the terms of the old covenant and flourish in the Land of Promise?
Kingship will not help if the king is someone who refuses to obey the Lord and walk in his ways.

  2. What kind of king does Israel need?
They need a king who lives in submission to the Lord and leads the people in obedience.

For 2 Samuel 3:6–39, you will explain how the many different details of the chapter all serve to confirm that the house of Saul was becoming weaker, the house of David stronger, and that David is innocent of violence in his rise to the throne. Having done so, you will then explain how David prefigured the Lord Jesus Christ in his quest for peace and distance from violence. Finally, you can encourage God’s people to know that there is no sin so heinous that it can not be forgiven and that we as Christians must welcome and accept all fellow believers as full members in God’s church.
