The books of 1 and 2 Samuel seek to ask and answer two important questions:
Will kingship help Israel obey the terms of the old covenant and flourish in the Promised Land? It will not help them if the king is someone who refuses to obey the Lord and walk in his ways.
What kind of king does Israel need? They need a king who lives in submission to the Lord and leads the people in obedience.
For 2 Samuel 1:17–27, you will explain the reason for David’s lament. Why has it been preserved for us by the Holy Spirit? What did David hope to accomplish for the people of Israel? What does it show us about David and his character, and how does this point forward to Jesus Christ?
