Jeremiah then reports that he carried out the command the Lord had given him. He took the cup from the Lord’s hand and made all the nations to whom the Lord sent me drink it.
He then lists the nations against whom this word of judgment has been proclaimed. Judgment begins with Judah but then extends to many other nations. Judah is no longer any different from all the other nations. The phrase as at this day
was probably added by Jeremiah after the fall of Jerusalem. The invasion of 605 BC was in fact the beginning of the Lord’s judgment against Judah which was now coming to a climax in 586 BC.1
After Judah, a number of other surrounding nations are listed. The list in Jeremiah 25:19–26 seems to start with Egypt in the south and move northwards, ending with Babylon itself.2 The phrase far and near
is merism that shows the extremes of something and includes everything in between. The main point of the list therefore is that the Lord’s judgment comes to all the kingdoms of the world that are on the face of the earth
(Jeremiah 25:26). The Lord’s judgment is universal and comprehensive.3 The judgment of the nations listed here is explained more fully in Jeremiah 46:1–51:64.
