The Lord again explains the meaning of the symbolic action that he has instructed Jeremiah to carry out. He instructs Jeremiah to tell the leaders who are with him that what Jeremiah is about to do is symbolic of the judgment that the Lord is bringing against Judah. The Lord uses his full title when he speaks: the Lord of Hosts, the God of Israel.
This stresses not only his unrivalled authority and power, but also that he is the covenant God of Israel (see Jeremiah 7:3). The Lord announces that he is bringing such disaster upon this place that the ears of everyone who hears of it will tingle.
The reference to tingling ears indicates an involuntary reaction of astonishment and dismay when hearing about a terrible disaster (see 1 Samuel 3:11; 2 Kings 21:12).1
