Why was the vessel spoiled in the potter’s hands and why did he rework it into another vessel, “as it seemed good to the potter to do”?

Jérémie 18:1–12 (NEG79)

1 La parole fut adressée à Jérémie de la part de l'Eternel, en ces mots:

As Jeremiah watches the potter at work, he observes that the vessel he is making is spoiled in the potter’s hand, and he reworks it into another vessel, "as it seemed good to the potter to do.” The point seems to be that the clay is not suitable for what the potter wants to do with it. The verbs used suggest that the potter remade the vessel a number of times.1 Regardless of the potter’s skill, the lump of clay never turned into a vessel that met the potter’s standards and so he would start again. It is not a picture of total rejection. The clay is worked and reworked until what is made conforms to what the potter wants, as it seemed good to the potter to do.2
