Living as church in unity and expectation

1 Chroniques 12:38–40 (NEG79)

38 Tous ces hommes, gens de guerre, prêts à combattre, arrivèrent à Hébron en sincérité de cœur pour établir David roi sur tout Israël. Et tout le reste d'Israël était également unanime pour faire régner David.

The description of these events, especially the joyful united participation of all Israel, would have been an encouragement to the postexilic community to work together and be committed to God and their leaders and at the same time to look with anticipation to the final realization of God’s promises to David and the people. Christians live in days of fulfilment and yet they await the grand consummation. Every time we meet on the Lord’s Day to hear God’s Word and to celebrate the Lord’s Supper we do so in joyous anticipation of the final Day of the Lord when all his people will be together with King Jesus, who is both the root and descendant of David (Revelation 22:16). In the light of this, the Chronicler, like the apostle Paul, encourages us to live in a way that is worthy of our calling in Christ, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace (Ephesians 4:1–3).1
