Jesus was convicted and condemned as a blasphemer (see Matthew 26:62–66; Luke 22:66–71). Despite the regular reading and hearing of Scripture, the Jews in Jerusalem did not understand how prophecies relate to Jesus (Isaiah 53:3; Psalm 118:22), and they did not accept that he was the Messiah.1 When they killed Jesus, they subsequently fulfilled the prophecies about him.
