What does it mean for Cornelius’ prayers and gifts to the poor to go up as a memorial offering before God?
Leviticus 2:1–16 gives details regarding the memorial offering. This was a voluntary offering in which a portion of grain was burnt on the altar with the rest given to the priests to use for their sustenance. The offering functioned in a manner similar to tribute that is brought to a king. Since the Lord is King of kings, it is fitting to bring him a gift in thanksgiving for his protection and care.1 The fact that Cornelius’ prayers and gifts are seen as a memorial offering shows that he recognizes the Lord as God and is devoted to him.2 In many ways he can be thought of as a believer who has embraced the Messiah by faith through old covenant shadows.3
