Commentary on Proverbs 25:17 (Summary)

Proverbes 25:17 (NEG79)

17 Mets rarement le pied dans la maison de ton prochain,De peur qu'il ne soit rassasié de toi et qu'il ne te haïsse.

Here we find pretty much the same thought as we found in the previous verse. Demarcate your contacts with friends. Respect the privacy of others. When you disregard this, you run the risk that the friendship ends up on the rocks.

The Hebrew verb sana that is being used here can indeed mean to hate, but it also refers to everything that precedes it. For example: to be annoyed by, to be irritated by. These emotions can indeed morph into hate. And so, this saying is an encouragement to not let it go this far.

For would it not be sad, when a valuable friendship is destroyed by overstepping one’s welcome in someone else’s home?
