Jeremiah’s message to the people is that they will lose everything. They will lose their houses, their fields, even their families. The invading enemy may be the instrument, but it is the Lord himself, who will do this: I will stretch out my hand against the inhabitants of the land.
This is the language of the curse that follows the breaking of the covenant.1
