In biblical wisdom the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom
(Proverbs 1:7). The root of all proper understanding and behaving is reverence for the Lord as creator and ruler of everything he has made. The question asked by the Lord implies that Judah lacks this reverence. They are a foolish and senseless people.
"As they did not hear the divine voice or see correctly the divine world, they could not revere God”.1
