The second phrase that describes true repentance is, If you remove your detestable things from my presence and do not waver.
True repentance requires that Israel get rid of all their idolatrous practices completely and worship the Lord only. And they must not waver. These changes must be permanent and total. There is absolutely no place for divided loyalty because there is no compatibility between the Lord and other gods. Syncretism simply has no place among the Lord’s people.1 These things are detestable
to the Lord and have no place in his presence. Jeremiah is calling on the people of Judah to share in the Lord’s disgust for idolatry.2
