We have already seen how northern Israel and Judah’s unfaithfulness towards the Lord leads to the land being polluted
or defiled (Jeremiah 3:4). The land has always been the place where Israel was supposed to experience the covenant blessings. Their faithful covenant life with the Lord was meant to be a picture of the creation blessings spoken of in Genesis (Genesis 1:28). Instead, their unfaithfulness has led to covenant curses (Genesis 3:1–14). Now the Lord promises that the days of restoration will bring blessing again. They will multiply and increase in the land.
The Lord’s ultimate purpose is to fulfill his creation purposes through the people of Israel.
