The prophet's words now reveal again precisely those home truths that the people did not want to know. The hypocrisy so clearly exposed in Jeremiah 3:4–5 showed that Judah wanted the assurances of the covenant and the so-called joys and benefits of worshipping Baal and other gods.1 But that kind of behaviour is simply not acceptable to the Lord. The Lord is not fooled by their hypocrisy. He can see only too clearly that the words they have spoken simply do not match the all the evil
they have done.
