Commentary on Luke 17:15 (Summary)

Luc 17:15 (NEG79)

15 L'un d'eux, se voyant guéri, revint sur ses pas, glorifiant Dieu à haute voix.

One of the ten goes back to Jesus. When? Right after he saw that he was healed? That is unlikely. For all of them had received the clear instruction from Jesus to go to the priests.

The priests were to determine if the healing was real and sufficient. There was a strict procedure for this, which took at least 14 days (see again Leviticus 14:1–20).

So, they had to go to Jerusalem, as in Jerusalem they would find the priests, and also be able to bring the necessary sacrifices. Thus, there was quite a bit of time between them leaving (for Jerusalem) and the return of the one person.

It must have also been Jesus’ intention that people in Jerusalem would hear about this healing.

They must know beforehand who was coming their way! These ten men are a strong witness to everyone of Jesus’ power.

That one person knows what he must do. He needs to go back to the master who has wondrously healed him. And so, he returns (to Jesus) praising God with a loud voice.

Through Jesus, he sees God’s gracious hand in his life. This man looks up high, very high.

He is an example of faith for many, then and now.
