How was the value of the land determined?

The value of the land was determined in two ways. Firstly, the land was assessed by its seed requirement. That is, how much seed was needed to sow the field. One homer of barley was worth 50 shekels of silver until the Jubilee year. According to Wenham, in Mesopotamia the standard price of barley was a shekel per homer. This resulted in an annual valuation of one shekel per year for a field of one homer.”1 Secondly, the valuation of the land changed depending on the number of years unto the next Jubilee. If 49 years remained, the land retains its full value.
