The proclamation of liberty allows the people to return to their property. This is a reference to the Hebrews’ ancestral land that the Lord designated for all the tribes of Israel. At times, the Hebrews would sell their land in order to pay off their debt. Additionally, the Hebrews could also sell themselves as indentured servants (Exodus 21:1–11). In the year of Jubilee, these people are released and are to return home as free people. Wenham remarks, "While the sabbatical year alleviated the plight of the poor, every seventh sabbatical year an attempt was made to give them a new start.”1
