This feast commemorates Israel's journey through the wilderness and how God had abundantly provided for them on their way (see Leviticus 23:43). The Hebrew term booths
(sǔkkāh) is derived from the verb sōḵ that means to cover over.
Here it refers to putting up a roof on a temporary shelter (see Genesis 33:17; Isaiah 1:8).
