The Lord now directs the Hebrews against cultic or temple prostitution. Canaanite religion centred on forms of worship that promote sex and fertility. Temple prostitution was, therefore, commonplace. The Canaanites believed that sexual acts within the sacred precincts would guarantee the fertility of their people, land and animals. Rather than become involved in pagan rituals, the people of God had to remain separate and give reverence to the sanctuary.
