In Mark 10:43–44 Jesus explains how it has to be among his disciples: But it shall not be so among you [as twelve disciples and leaders].
Here too there is the impulse to be great – greater than the others. The question of the James and John and the annoyance of the ten other disciples prove it. But whoever would be great among you [within the circle of the twelve] must be your servant.
Apostles must desire to surpass each other not in superior power but in service – and then in service of each other. It is always easier to serve subordinates than colleagues!1
