There is some debate amongst commentators regarding the commandments to which Jesus is referring. Some argue that Jesus has in mind the commands of the kingdom that have already been given (Matthew 5:3–16) and are still to come (Matthew 5:21–48). 1 Others argue that he is referring to the laws that have been previously revealed (Old Testament) and are now further explained by him (Matthew 5:21–48) in the light of his coming/the fulfillment he will bring. 2
