Why should believers rejoice when they suffer?

Matthieu 5:12 (NEG79)

12 Réjouissez-vous et soyez dans l'allégresse, parce que votre récompense sera grande dans les cieux; car c'est ainsi qu'on a persécuté les prophètes qui ont été avant vous.

Normally, one becomes despondent when suffering. For the Christian however, this must not be the case (see Acts 5:31; Philippians 3:10). Disciples must realize that the reward for following Christ is not one that will necessarily be seen in this world, but in the world to come. 1 When suffering for the sake of Christ, disciples show themselves to be part of God’s people (Hebrews 11:32–40), 2 aligned with the prophets of old. As such, persecution (as a result of obeying Jesus) is not a reason for despair but thanksgiving because it confirms that you belong to God’s kingdom. 3
