To hunger and thirst for righteousness could refer to prayer for God to intervene in this world and deliver the innocent from the oppression of the wicked (see Psalm 10:1–18). 1 Elsewhere in the Sermon on the Mount, however, righteousness refers to right conduct in the sight of God (Matthew 5:10, Matthew 5:20; Matthew 6:1, Matthew 6:33). 2 As such, to hunger and thirst for righteousness means to desire to do what is right, to live life in conformity with God’s will. 3
