The Old Testament principle of eye for an eye and tooth for a tooth
is often referred to as the Lex talionis, a Latin word that means law of retribution. 1 The law was meant to be applied in the old covenant legal system, 2 ensuring that the punishment fits the crime, and thereby limiting further escalation/blood feuds. 3 It vindicated a person who had suffered an evil by punishing the assailant. 4 In Jesus’ day, the law had been misinterpreted as a principle for personal vengeance. 5 Instead of avenging honour, Jesus will encourage his disciples to show mercy. 6
