The elders who give themselves to teaching God’s Word (1 Timothy 5:17–18) should be provided for (Matthew 10:10; Luke 10:7; 1 Corinthians 9:14), so that they can give the needed time and energy to the study and proclamation of God’s truth (see Acts 6:4). 1 When a pastor has to make plans to provide for his own living costs, his attention is divided and the quality of his teaching and ministry work will suffer as a result. 2
