Commentary on Psalm 139:2 (Summary)

Psaume 139:2 (NEG79)

2 Tu sais quand je m'assieds et quand je me lève,Tu pénètres de loin ma pensée;

Already in the first word you, it is emphasized that the Lord totally knows what man is thinking and doing. The last word, merahoq, can mean either from afar or from long ago (as in Isaiah 22:11; Isaiah 37:26). Both explanations teach us that the Lord is not a far away God in heaven, but that he is very close to man.

With Almighty God there is knowledge of man. Therefore, the apostle John can write in 1 John 3:20, For whenever our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and he knows everything. (Compare with John 21:17, where Peter says the same about Jesus: Lord, you know everything.)
