Immediately Jesus knows what the scribes are thinking and he questions it. Through this question he demonstrates that he truly is what they preclude from the start: God himself (Mark 2:7). For who else can fathom the spirit of a person than the Spirit of God alone? The scribes ought to know that God (whom they exclude in their thoughts) has caught them red-handed.1
