Why did Joseph and Mary need to bring a sacrifice?

24et pour offrir en sacrifice deux tourterelles ou deux jeunes pigeons, comme cela est prescrit dans la loi du Seigneur.
The sacrifices were part of the purification following childbirth. For wealthy families, a lamb and a pigeon were required (Leviticus 12:6–7). Those who could not afford a lamb were allowed to bring two pigeons instead (Leviticus 12:8).
