The translation adoption as sons
is a word that is unique to Paul in the New Testament (Romans 8:15, Romans 8:23; Romans 9:4; Ephesians 1:5).1 The idea is that the rights which belong to a natural born son are given also to those who are adopted into a family. Legally an adopted child has the same rights as a natural child.2 Thus, the rights which Jesus had as the Son who perfectly obeyed God’s law are shared with those who are adopted. Specifically, the right of inheritance and life in God’s presence are shared.
