Why did David go to Engedi?

Engedi means spring of a young goat. It was located on the western shore of the Dead Sea, some distance from Maon. With a powerful spring (see Song of Solomon 1:14),1 it would serve as a good place for temporary refuge, with David and his men most likely staying in nearby caves.2
