It is very likely that David understood Saul’s actions to be influenced by the evil spirit which was acting upon him. Thus, he did not see the throwing of the spear as a murderous intent from Saul but rather an outburst of madness.1 Saul may also have apologized for his actions2 or covered them up by saying that it was part of David’s training.3 In either case, David showed great loyalty to Saul by continuing to play his harp despite the obvious danger.
