Why did David talk about his life as a shepherd?

1 Samuel 17:34–35 (NEG79)

34 David dit à Saül: Ton serviteur faisait paître les brebis de son père. Et quand un lion ou un ours venait en enlever une du troupeau,

In the time when David lived, shepherding sheep was a dangerous task. There were continued threats to the life of the shepherd and his flock (see Genesis 31:38–40).1 It was not uncommon for lions or bears to make off with sheep.2 Though David had only fought animals, he had lots of experience and had shown himself to be an accomplished fighter.3 He mentioned this experience in order to convince Saul that he was able to fight against Goliath. It would not be a reckless act on his part.4
